I believe that when dealing with threats to our freedom and liberty, there is no greater priority than the security and the peace of mind of the American people.
That is why I am fundamentally opposed to plans coming from the Obama Administration and their congressional allies to close Guantanamo Bay and move the terrorists there to the U.S. mainland. There is no reasonable rationale to move the "worst of the worst" from a secure location outside of our country to a facility on American soil.
If there are problems at Guantanamo, then they can be addressed. But from what we are led to believe, this move can only be the forerunner of another very bad idea - conducting terrorist trials in civilian courts rather than in military tribunals.
Terrorists like the 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, and the "Underpants Bomber", Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, are enemy combatants and should be treated as such. These individuals would willingly kill innocent American men, women and children. To adopt a policy guaranteeing them freedom from enhanced interrogation and ensuring them Miranda rights is absurd.
Every member of Congress should oppose this irrational policy. As your next U.S. Congressman from Michigan's Ninth District, I will lead efforts to restore sanity to our homeland security policy. I will worry less about the message we are sending to America's critics and instead focus on the safety of the American people themselves.
A fundamental civil liberty is the sense and assurance of security. Under this Administration and this Congress, that liberty is slipping away. We demand better from our representatives. And I can assure you that as your next U.S. Congressman, those demands will be met.
